Questions To Ask An Interviewer:

Once the interviewer has finished asking you his questions he will almost always offer you the opportunity of asking a few questions yourself. It is important that you have some questions to ask the interviewer otherwise it will look like you really aren’t all that bothered about getting the job. So here are a few examples of good questions you might want to ask an interviewer. Some of the questions will obviously have to be tailored to yourself and the job that you are applying for but these are some good questions to ask at an interview. Think about each question and work out an answer to suit. You may well be able to think of some additional questions to ask at an interview but in the meantime here are some that we have come up with:

Why has this position become available?

There is absolutely no reason why you wouldn’t want to know why the position has become available – it is unlikely that you would want to take a job if your predecessor is off sick because of stress bought on by being overloaded with too much work.

What do you like about working for this company?

Now this is an opportunity to turn the tables on your interviewer. If your interviewer sounds like he genuinely likes working for the company and is passionate about it then this is usually a good sign.

How many people have held this job position in the last three years?

This follows on from the above question. If there has been a high turnover in staff over a three-year period you can pretty much guarantee that there is a problem with the role.

Are there any plans for expansion or cutbacks in staff?

At the end of the day you want to make sure that if you leave your present job to take another you are not going to find yourself being made redundant in the first 6 months.

Is there opportunity for career progression and promotion within the company?

If you are career minded you will want to know whether you will be able to advance through the ranks or whether you are going to end up stuck in one job for ten years.

What kind of staff turnover does the company have?

This is another area you will be interested in. If it turns out that the staff turnover is low and the average employee spends approximately 5 years with the company you will know that all is well. If the staff turnover is high then you might want to be asking yourself is this the company for you?

What is the company’s attitude towards additional training and professional advancement?

It may well be that you are looking to gain additional training or education to help you along with your job or assist you in career advancement.

When can I expect to hear from you?

This is not an unreasonable question and will not be looked upon in any such way.

The Final Part Of The Interview:

When all of the questions have been asked and everyone seems to be bringing the meeting to a close you can begin to relax slightly. However just because the formalities have finished the interview is not over until you are off the premises and out of sight of any other members of staff so remember not to let your guard down. Remember to do the following when you leave the interview:

(a) Thank the interviewer for his/her time;

(b) Keep smiling;

(c) Shake your interviewers hand.

If you are a smoker do not light up until you are well away from the premises (although smoking is no longer allowed in public places by law).

We wish you all the luck in your job hunting and hope that the information we have provided you will help you along the way to getting that great job you deserve.
